We are delighted to share with you our interview “Questions and Answers » with Mika LEAH founder and CEO of Goomi Group.
Carla MARTIN: Please introduce yourself for those who do not know you yet. Kindly tell us about your background and your business?
Mika LEAH: My name is Mika Leah and I am the Founder and CEO of two companies, the first is Goomi Group and the second is Buxxomly. I had career in advertising and marketing, with experience in event marketing and sales. My company Goomi Group provides corporate onsite & virtual wellness programs to clients nationwide in the US, and globally in Europe, Asia and Canada. Buxxomly is a radical reimagining of womens undergarments called Liftwearä Lingerie.
CM: What was your path to the role you have now?
ML: Three weeks after my 33rd birthday I was rushed into emergency heart surgery, and that was the moment that changed my life. Four procedures and five heart stents later, I call this my bonus life. Knowing life is a gift, I took a risk to start Goomi Group to give me the time with my family. It also gave me the courage to take a chance of Buxxomly and just go for it. Life is about the journey, not the destination.
CM: What does a typical working day look like for you?
ML: My day starts with 30 minute walk in my neighborhood with a friend, followed by sit ups and 15 minutes of meditation. My husband makes coffee & breakfast and we sit together sipping talking about what we want to accomplish that day. I then check emails and have a status call with my Director of Operations. After that, my day takes on a life of its own, working on both companies and getting what needs to get done, done. Work ends between 5pm/6pm to make dinner for my family. The family eats together every night and then we either watch one of our favorite tv shows or play cards & board games. My husband and I then put the kids to bed, and then we crawl into bed and talk about our successes and failures before going to sleep.
CM: Tell us what is your success mindset?
ML: I repeat positive affirmations each morning to myself for about 5-8 minutes. When things get rough, I take a 5-minute meditation break. I work hard to trust my intuition and constantly remind myself that I can do to hard things.
CM: What are the three things to take to a desert island?
ML: Other than my family (husband & two kids), I would take music, a comfortable hooded zip up sweatshirt, and my phone.
CM: What was your biggest challenge on the personal side also business side?
ML: My biggest challenge on the personal side is making my family the priority, and remembering that they need my time more than my business. On the business side, it is trusting my instincts and then listening to act on it.
CM: I would like to know what is the best advice in business you have been given? may I ask who gave it to you ?
ML: My mom asked me, “what would you do if money was no option?” And I know someone once said, Do what you love and love what you do. That is the advice I always follow.
CM: Please tell us how do you motivate yourself?
ML: I have started the practice of morning affirmations. Most of the time though, it is just telling myself to keep going, put one foot in front of the other. Then reminding myself that it is ok to take a break when I need.
CM: What is your life motto?
ML: Life is short, spend it with people you love – doing what you love, and always be grateful for what you have.
CM: What was the most challenging moment in your life? And how did you manage to overcome it?
ML: There have been so many, and I overcame them all by learning from them and changing myself to be better as a result.
CM: Who inspires you today?
ML: I find inspiration from everyone I meet, and from those I read about. People who inspire me: my grandparents, my parents, my husband, and Brene Brown, Michelle Obama, Kamala Harris, Glennon Doyle, Abby Wambach, Rachel Hollis, Kelly Clarkson, Gabby Bernstein, and the rest of the Rebel Girls from history.
CM: Do you have a secret talent?
ML: I can sail 18’ Catamarans.
CM: If you had the power to change just one thing in the world what would it be?
ML: I would have a hard time deciding between saving the environment, ending world hunger, and world peace.
CM: Thank you so much Mika for your time and kindness to answer my questions.
